Peak Perfect Peonies...

(All photos taken during my trip Mother's day weekend to my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana...)

This morning the green fists of the peonies are getting ready
to break my heart
as the sun rises,
as the sun strokes them with his old, buttery fingers

and they open ---
pools of lace,
white and pink ---
and all day the black ants climb over them,

boring their deep and mysterious holes
into the curls,
craving the sweet sap,
taking it away

to their dark, underground cities ---
and all day
under the shifty wind,
as in a dance to the great wedding,

the flowers bend their bright bodies,
and tip their fragrance to the air,
and rise,
their red stems holding

all that dampness and recklessness
gladly and lightly,
and there it is again ---
beauty the brave, the exemplary,

blazing open.
Do you love this world?
Do you cherish your humble and silky life?
Do you adore the green grass, with its terror beneath?

Do you also hurry, half-dressed and barefoot, into the garden,
and softly,
and exclaiming of their dearness,
fill your arms with the white and pink flowers,

with their honeyed heaviness, their lush trembling,
their eagerness
to be wild and perfect for a moment, before they are
nothing, forever?

  1. Dear Cassandra
Oh my goodness, the peonies are so beautiful that they don't even look real! The white, soft pink and yellow combination of the flowers are exquisite! Don't you wish they last forever and ever! What a lovely post....!

  2. I happened upon your blog from another and was greeted with these exquisite peonies and what a lovely combination with the iris. Your photographs are sublime. I can almost feel the velvety softness of the peony petals.

The poem is lovely as well. Thank you.

  3. Peonies are on my list of favourite flowers. I love these pale pink ones in your photos. Peonies are not out yet here in my garden. Everything is so late this year because of our unusually cold winter. I will just have to be patient!

  5. They are such beauties in their pastel colours and with all their ruffles. Its a great poem aswell to go along with the photos. I have a peony something quite similar called "Bowl of Beauty" with centres like those but a darker pink outer edge of petals. It will be next month before I see those but they don't last too long in the garden. The ones in your photos look like they are at least the size of saucers.

Thankyou ever so much Cassandra for popping by my blog and becoming a follower. I look forward to many visits here too. :) Rosie
